Inscriptions: Obverse - Australia's 150th anniversary, Sydney, 1788-1938; Reverse - Commemorative Salon of Photography 1938. The Australian Commemorative Salon of Photography was included in the official programme of Australia's 150th anniversary celebrations. Organised by the Photographic Society of New South Wales, it was held at the Commonwealth Bank Chambers, March 23 to April 9, 1938.

Photographer. Harold Cazneaux was born in Wellington, New Zealand in March 1878. His family moved to Adelaide in South Australia in 1889 and Cazneaux worked with his father at the Hammer & Co. photographic studio as a colourist and retoucher. Initially wanting to pursue a career an an artist Cazneaux also attended classes at the Adelaide School of Design.
